What are CCTV cameras?

They’re cameras which record continuously and stream the live recording to a screen – that screen could be inside your house, it could be your television, tablet or even your phone. Their goal is for you to watch it so you can see that area (maybe it’s your front door or your garage, your kid’s room or your car) and make sure that everything is safe and sound.

Liz Ransome-CrokerWhich? Magazine
“It’s a good idea to discuss any CCTV plans with your neighbours first – some Which? members told us that they share a system with their neighbours, which might be one way to cut costs”.

How do they work?

They work by streaming a video of a certain area to another device. They can be analogue or digital cameras with a recorder, or IP cameras, which stream directly to a mobile device. Some cameras stream permanently, and others only start to record when movement is detected.

What types of CCTV cameras are there?

There are two distinct types; analogue and digital (also known as IP). Here’s a little explanation of each type:

    • They’re older and they used to measure resolution in lines but now they measure in pixels.
    • They’re cheaper but the quality of the image isn’t as good as the more expensive ones.
    • The image produced is analogue, so it alternates the signal.
    • You can’t store the videos on a cloud or a device, you have to have a video storage system.
    • They can be quite difficult to install since they need lots of cables: one for audio, one for sound and one for power.

Digital or IP cameras>

  • These are the newer type of CCTV cameras, and they can stream the images captured over a wireless network.
  • They can operate wirelessly or wired.
  • They are more technologically advanced than analogue models and they tend to have features such as facial recognition, motion detection and zoom.
  • The storage method is usually an SD memory card or a cloud service, but an NVR (Network Video Recorder) can also be used.
  • They provide a much higher image resolution since they tend to be high definition (HD) and 4K.
  • They’re easy to install and tend not to need cables since most of them are wireless and only need one cable for power, as opposed to the analogue ones which need three cables.

You can find out more info in the table below:

Type Features
Dome The most popular type, usually used in homes or businesses. They have a “dome” shape with a lens inside and those with night vision will have infrared LEDs built around the lens.
Bullet These CCTV cameras are long, and also used in homes and businesses. They’re perfect for use outside. Their lens is in the centre of the camera, and they have infrared LEDs so they can be used at night.
Box These are also quite long, and they’re rectangular because the box and the camera lens are in separate places. They are more powerful so used in government organisations and large businesses. Sometimes, you can choose your lens.
PTZ The acronym stands for “Pan” (rotate horizontally), “Tilt” (rotate vertically) and “Zoom” (look closely at the subject). They are controlled remotely by a control centre or through mobile apps. They are cameras intended for professional use.

What video storage and recording methods are there?

There are three different ways in which CCTV cameras store the images that they capture:
Storage method Features
Digital Video Recorder (DVR) This type is used to take analogue images.
They require a cable which connects the camera to the video storage unit.
They convert analogue signals to digital ones.
In some cases it is possible to connect a DVR system to the internet, so you can monitor the images caught by the camera without being close to the camera itself.
Network Video Recorder (NVR) Connects to the digital camera via a network or cable.
Recommended method if the camera does not have an SD memory card slot.
Signal conversion is not required.
They are connected to the internet so that you can control it remotely.
SD Memory Card Used only by digital CCTV cameras.
Typical CCTV cameras support 64GB to 120GB SD cards.
The recording remains inside the camera, and you have to remove and clear the SD card when it’s full or buy a new SD card.
Very practical as no additional wiring or video storage system is required.
You can store the recordings on a private cloud service or one such as Amazon Web Services.

Who should buy a CCTV camera?

Anyone and everyone could benefit from owning a CCTV camera. Especially if you have a business since there tends to be a lot of entrances, exits and possibilities of criminal activity happening. Having said this, people are also recommended to buy a CCTV camera for their home so that the chance of people entering or breaking into your house is significantly reduced.

You can even have a CCTV camera to put in a room in your house if you have a child or a pet so that you can make sure that they are safe in that room. These days, you can also get CCTV cameras through which you can talk, so if you’re away from home you could talk to your child to make sure that they’re well and safe.

What are the pros and cons of CCTV cameras?

Take a look at the table below to learn about the pros and cons of CCTV cameras.

Shopping Criteria

When choosing a CCTV camera, it’s important to consider various things. Luckily for you, we’ve done all the work:

Take a look:

Can the camera send alerts to applications?

It is very important that the CCTV camera that you are considering can send alerts to your phone or tablet when it detects that something is wrong. This means that you can sleep well knowing that everything is fine.

With some CCTV cameras, you can also control the camera from your phone, tablet, laptop or computer. You can stop the recording, start the recording or change the direction of the camera lens.

Does it have facial recognition?

Facial recognition is a great option for those who live in an area that could be at a high risk of being burgled, and it allows the camera to analyse the recordings to see if the same person appears more than once in the footage. Additionally, these cameras can recognise familiar faces and approved individuals. It can also activate an alert when it is unable to identify a person.

Did you know that the UK has 4 million CCTV cameras, which equals to 20% of the total amount of CCTV cameras in the world?

What is the resolution of the recorded images and does it have night vision?

With the advances in technology in terms of image resolution and recording, you can find some cameras that have the ability to record full HD or 4k. You should keep in mind that the better the resolution, the easier it will be to recognise intruders and see exactly what your camera is recording.

The resolution of the camera may reduce when uploading files to the cloud. This usually reduces the quality by around 720 pixels.

We recommend that you get a CCTV camera with night vision since most criminals operate at night.

Does it tilt?

Panning, tilting and zooming (PTZ) is available with most cameras, but not all of them. It’s important to have these features since you will be able to have a greater field of view. You will be able to control the movements from your phone, which is great as you don’t actually have to go near the camera to do it.

We recommend that the viewing angle of your camera should be at least 130°, and can rotate up to 80°. With these viewing abilities and ranges of movement, you’ll be able to have a viewing scope of almost 360°, to enable complete control over the location under surveillance.

Where does it store the images?

You can store the footage locally or externally. An advantage of storing the footage locally is that the quality of the video is not reduced. However, if you store the footage on the cloud you’ll always have the advantage that the likelihood of it being stolen is a lot lower than if you were to store the footage on the CCTV camera itself.

If you use cloud storage, you have the advantage that you will not lose the recordings no matter what an intruder does to your camera as cloud storage is separate from the physical device.

Does it have motion sensors?

Another feature that CCTV cameras can do is sense when someone is moving. With this function, the camera can alert you to movement and you will know very quickly if someone is attempting to break into your home. Some of the more technologically advanced CCTV camera models will be able to differentiate between people, animals or cars when triggering the motion sensor.

Does it have two-way audio?

A CCTV camera with audio capabilities will enable you to see and hear absolutely everything that’s going on. Besides, CCTV cameras that have the ability to record sounds may also have the ability to emit sounds through a small built-in speaker. This is great for talking to kids when you’re not at home.

As you now know, a CCTV camera is a well-worthy investment if you want peace of mind and if you want to know what’s happening both inside and outside of your house.
