What types of bathroom scales are out there?

As you already know, these small household appliances are used to calculate body weight. It automatically works out the weight of the person on the scale, and in most cases, uses both imperial and metric units. What are analog scales?

These devices do not operate electronically. Two different types exist: the first one works with springs and has been the most common type for decades. In fact, these are the models which are still on sale nowadays. The weight goes to a single point and compresses a spring, which in turn rotates the scale’s weight indicator. Depending on the model, the weight may be off by a few grams. Analog scales are not as accurate as digital ones, which tend to give an accurate measuring to one decimal place. In the case of kitchen or scientific scales, they can sometimes measure up to three decimal places.

Also analog, counterbalance scales are most commonly found in medical or dietitian offices. The way they work is very similar to that of old Roman scales: a counterweight is used to balance the scale and match the weight of the person on it. These models can also be a little more inaccurate than digital scales.

Did you know that bodybuilders tend to weigh all their foods to know their exact calorie intake?

What are digital scales?

Digital scales have a thin wire that changes the electrical resistance when compressed. The resistance will change based on the weight that is placed on top of the sensor, then, it will be converted into kilograms, stone or pounds. The majority of these digital scales are 100% accurate.

Which should I choose: analog or digital?

A quick study of both types makes it clear that digital scales offer many more advantages than analog models. The values are easier to read on the LED screen, and they are by far more accurate. You’ll never have to calibrate your scale, and you even have access to smart models which can sometimes even be connected to your smart phone so you can further monitor your weight. Digital scales definitely perform much better than their analog counterparts.

That being said, it doesn’t mean that they don’t also come with disadvantages. Digital scales, for instance, require batteries in order to operate. As we all know, batteries don’t last forever. If the scale doesn’t display how much power is left in the batteries, they can run out at any moment. This wouldn’t happen with analog scales since they don’t use electricity.

Both analog and digital scales tend to have similar prices. The more expensive scales are smart scales, since they have more features than the classic body weight scale.

How do smart scales work?

These models come with additional features and have the ability to connect to applications via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. These apps allow you to see graphs showing the evolution of your weight. Other available features are designed to analysed other data related to your physical fitness, like body fat and BMI.

Are smart scales better than digital ones?

Even though smart scales cost more then digital ones, it’s fair to say that it’s worth the extra few quid. Smart scales come with lots of features. You can quickly access data from your tablet or smartphone, and they offer info such as body fat, visceral muscle, body composition and BMI, among others. However, it’s important to remember that although these scales give you lots of information about your body, they can never beat the advice of a medical professional.

At the end of the day, a smart scale is only the best option if you can afford to spend a little more. That being said, you do need to be careful with smart scales. You need to learn how to analyse and process this data yourself, but in a healthy way. With these devices, it’s easy to become obsessed and overwhelmed by the numbers on the scale. But remember, everyone loses and gains weight at a different pace, don’t rush things and remember to look after your physical and mental health when you’re trying to lose or gain weight.

Shopping Criteria

We couldn’t possibly end our guide on bathroom scales without talking about the most important aspects to consider when purchasing one. We’ve already talked about a lot of things related to bathroom scales, but let’s dive into this list about what you need to think about before buying a new set of bathroom scales.

By now, you know the three main types of bathroom scales that are available on the British market: analog, digital and smart. Evaluate all three types and decide which model is most tailored to your needs. Answer this question: what do you want bathroom scales for? Your answer should inform your decision.

While it’s true that the majority of models have a similar size, there are still some differences – both in terms of shape and dimensions. This is why you should keep this aspect in mind during your purchase. Think about where you want to store your scales. If you have limited space, it’s best to pick a compact set of scales, for example.

A scale will help you know your weight, which is why it’s important for your device to give you the most accurate value possible. As we’ve already discussed, analog models won’t be as precise as digital or smart models – unless these have a problem or their batteries fail. The typical accuracy is to the nearest 100 grams.

If you think that you want to leave your scale in plain sight, it might be interesting to buy a model with an attractive design. You could also find a scale whose colour matches that of your bathroom. We recommend you to keep it in good condition, which means cleaning it when you clean the rest of your bathroom.

As you’ve discovered throughout our article, the scales available on the market can offer very different features. You should think about which ones are most important to you, and opt for a model that satisfies your needs. Remember that analog and digital bathroom scales will only be able to tell you your weight. Go for a smart model if you’re looking to truly get the most out of your device.

The main function of scales is to give you your weight, but recent models can offer you much more than that. They can now evaluate your overall physical fitness in depth. Knowing some of the data offered by smart scales can help you change your lifestyle habits to healthier ones. That being said, this should always be done under the supervision of a health professional.

The type of scale – analog, digital or smart – will have a big impact on the cost of the product. You can easily find models under £10, while others can cost well over £70. The use you’ll make of the scale will ultimately determine the model you need and the price range you should consider.

We hope you found our shopping guide on scale very interesting and useful. If that’s the case, feel free to leave us a comment in the section below, or share our article on your social media!
